Spanning nearly four decades, Julian Rachlin’s career is a rare story of artistic evolution – from one of the world’s most celebrated child prodigies to a multidimensional musician at the summit of his profession. Since debuting at 14 with the Vienna Philharmonic and Riccardo Muti, he has captivated audiences worldwide as a violinist and violist of expressive depth and technical brilliance, whilst also forging a stellar reputation as conductor, artistic director, and creative innovator.
As soloist, Rachlin appears with leading orchestras including the Royal Concertgebouw, Chicago Symphony, Bavarian Radio Symphony, and Hong Kong Philharmonic, collaborating with such renowned conductors as Daniele Gatti, Klaus Mäkelä, Zubin Mehta, and Gianandrea Noseda. Equally compelling on the podium, he conducts many of the world’s foremost ensembles – from the BBC Philharmonic and Chicago Symphony to the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and Filarmonica della Scala.
Rachlin currently serves as Music Director of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra (Israel), Chief Conductor of the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra (Norway), Artistic Partner of the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz (Germany), and Artistic Director of Austria’s Herbstgold Festival.
Cross-disciplinary collaborators range from classical superstars (Janine Jansen, Evgeny Kissin, and Sir András Schiff) to theatrical icons (John Malkovich, Gérard Depardieu, and Sir Roger Moore), and he has been entrusted with world premieres of works by Auerbach, Penderecki, and Vangelis, amongst others. Rachlin has recorded for Deutsche Grammophon, Sony Classical, and Warner Classics, received numerous awards, and is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Children’s Fund.
Born in Lithuania and raised in Vienna, Julian Rachlin studied violin with Boris Kuschnir and Pinchas Zukerman, and conducting with Mariss Jansons, Sophie Rachlin, and Daniele Gatti. He plays on the 1704 “ex-Liebig” Stradivarius violin and a 1785 Lorenzo Storioni viola, on loan from the Dkfm. Angelika Prokopp Privatstiftung, with strings sponsored by Thomastik-Infeld. When not on tour, Julian resides in Vienna with his wife, Sarah, and their dog, Rupert.
