A Google Earth fly-through following the course of the former Leicester & Swannington Railway, from the remains of Leicester West Bridge station to the footof the Swannington incline. This was one of Britains earliest steam railways, opened in 1832 and engineered by Robert Stephenson. It included two rope-hauled inclines at Swannington and Bagworth, and a mile-long tunnel at Glenfield. A long section of the trackbed, between Coalville and Desford, is occupied by the existing Leicester to Burton (ex Midland) railway.
This version includes much more detail than the earlier version, including all adjoining branches and mineral lines, and the use of green graphics to show accessible parts of the disused line and connecting paths.
Satellite imagery dates from 16/6/2021, 28/3/2022, 21/5/2023 and 21/5/2023 and was obtained using Google Earth. Route locations and historical details were obtained from Rail Map Online and National Library of Scotland Georeferenced Maps. Modern street names and place names are from Open Sreet Map and Streetmap.co.uk.
