The 10 yard dash is a measure of explosiveness and speed. It is tested at the NFL combine and at most high school and college camps/combines. Though the 40 yard dash wins in popularity, the 10 yard dash is more applicable to the game of football, which consists of short sprints of 10 yards or less. Rarely does a player run for an entire 40 yards during a game. Therefore, the 10 yard dash time is very important for all college coaches.
This video covers techniques and minor tricks to help with your speed. In other words, following the methodologies here, you will increase your time without necessarily increasing your athleticism. In order to see the greatest improvement in your overall time, you should use this video in conjunction with various speed and strength training drills. Improve athleticism, explosiveness, strength, and technique.
I can’t stress enough the importance of leaning until you feel like you are going to fall. At the University of Iowa, I was stubborn for the first 3 years and did not lean forward much because it felt so wrong and counterintuitive. However, when I really started applying the technique properly and leaning to the point where I was almost falling, I improved my 10 yard dash from 1.81 to a 1.65. Believe me, my athleticism did not improve that drastically in a one month period, I just had much better technique. I ended up breaking the all-time defensive line 10 yard dash record at Iowa when I properly applied these techniques.
Follow the steps below to maximize your 10 yard Dash performance:
Use the entire line. Put your hands down an inch or two in front of the line. If they ask you to move back, go ahead.
Bring your left foot as close to your right hand as possible, and about 8 inches to the left.
Put your right foot in line with your right hand and 1-2 feet behind your left foot.
Bring your left arm up
LEAN FORWARD
Explode out, driving your left hand forward, and taking a long first step
Stay low
Take long steps
Run a straight line
Finish through the line
