Today, in our ongoing study of the Jewish Life-Cycle, we concluded our unit about B'rit Milah (covenantal circumcision) by learning Bereshit Rabbah 46, a midrash about how circumcision "perfects" the man, as well as Maimonides' Guide for the Perplexed (Moreh Nevukhim), which comments extensively on the "rational" and "moral" reasons for circumcising (namely, to reduce libido and encourage sexual moderation). Toward the end of our class, we began our next unit of study, on Bar/Bat/B'nei Mitzvah, exploring how the term refers to "obliged/subject to the commandments," (as seen in tractate Bava Metzia 96a) and how the age / stage of life at which Bar/Bat Mitzvah becomes relevant is correlated to the onset of puberty and independent, adult decision-making (as framed in tractate Niddah 45b-46a).
