Chopin's Étude Op.10, No.12 in C minor, also known as the "Revolutionary Étude" or the "Étude on the Bombardment of Warsaw", played here according to his own tempo indication (placed in the historical tradition of metrical reading).
Chopin was extremely sensitive to exact playing in what he fellt was the perfect tempo of his compositions. His metronome was never far from his piano, Carl Mikuli writes.
It might be a shock to you if you've not considered the historical, metrical reading of the metronome marks before. Apart from the heavy impacts of the low C, illustrating almost the impacts of the cannon balls, you'll hear a lot more detail in the left hand than usual, connecting this work more to the tradition of Beethoven/Clementi than our today's way of playing.
Stay tuned for an episode on this work, diving into some interesting details.
