The Extremism Panel from the 2024 IEEE Conference on Digital Platforms and Societal Harms (Washington, DC from 14th to 15th of October 2024) explored the exploitation of social media platforms by extremists, and the latest technological and policy responses by industry, government and civil society.
Moderated by Skip Gilmour the Director of Technology at GIFCT (previously the Intelligence and Investigative Lead at Roblox, and before that with the FBI) the panel features:
Tom Sobocinski, Partner at the a strategic advisory and risk intelligence firm TDI, previously with the FBI for 25 years including as Special Agent in Charge of the Baltimore Field Office, Deputy Assistant Director of the International Operations Division, and Section Chief of the Counterterrorism Division.
Briana Kablack, Policy Manager in the Dangerous Organizations and Individuals team at Meta. She was previously a Brumley Next Generation Graduate Fellow at the Strauss Center for International Security and Law.
Cristina López G, Senior Analyst at Graphika where she provides intelligence on trust & safety issues, and research on media manipulation, propaganda, information operations, disinformation campaigns, and global disinformation threats on multiple social media platforms.
Brian Hughes, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Polarization & Extremism Research & Innovation Lab (PERIL) and a Research Assistant Professor in the American University.
The IEEE Conference on Digital Platforms and Societal Harms focused on addressing the creation, propagation and engagement of harmful digital information by bringing together stakeholders, including technologists, law and policy makers, non-profit organizations, private sectors, and end users. In 2024 we focused on extremism, exploitation through AI generated imagery, hate speech, and disinformation.
