So, the time is up.
The last of the Great Western HST’s have said their final goodbyes to the Western region, after their special lineup of power cars: 43186, 43187, and 43093, with 43004, 43042 and 43198 on the rear on the 13th of December this year…
49 years is an astonishing achievement, and it must be taken into account that they have revolutionised UK and foreign intercity travel from their early introductions, with Australia’s own XPT’s still going strong with VP185 engines! Their legacy will continue, as they head into preservation and other mainline usage.
A very sad sight for all of us enthusiasts to see them bid farewell to their original stomping grounds, and even those who have grown up with the HST’s themselves, commuters, travellers etc.
The sheer fact that they were only introduced as a ‘stopgap’ until the arrival of the APT’s still continues to baffle me!
A truly amazing icon of Britain, the High Speed Train…
