This wasn’t the last day in Mauritius…
It was the last day at the hotel we were staying at.

And you know what checkout days do?
They don’t just pack your bags… they quietly pack your heart too.

We had spent three peaceful days here — a private beach, fresh air, and the kind of silence that slows your thoughts down and brings you back to yourself. Then Bhiwajee, came to pick us up, because we were moving to Bhiwajee and Nandini’s home — friends from drama school (87–90 batch). Not just friends… family.

On the way, we stopped at a place that changed the mood of the day completely: Apravasi Ghat — a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Standing there, I felt something deeply human:

History isn’t only in books.
History is in footsteps.

This is where thousands arrived long ago — carried by promises, paperwork, and hope. They were told stories like, “There’s gold under the stones.” They came on “agreements”… and over time, even the word “agreement” transformed into “girmit”… and then “girmitiya.” Words changed. But what people lived through… stayed heavy.

You see the holding areas. You hear about the checks.
And then you hear about the 16 steps they climbed — stepping out into an unknown future, believing life would be better.

That’s what hit me:
Tired bodies… uncertain minds… but a stubborn, beautiful thing in the eyes — hope.
