Defense Traps Officer With His Own Body Camera Footage

The officer told his supervisor Paul Caneiro was "having problems with his cameras." There's just one problem: the body camera proves Paul never said cameras. He said "stuff in the garage."

Officer Brendan Bernhard responded to Paul Caneiro's house fire on November 20, 2018, hours before firefighters would discover four bodies at Paul's brother's mansion eleven miles away. When his sergeant asked him to find out where the surveillance DVR was, Bernhard approached Paul and his daughter. Paul's daughter answered most of the questions. And when Bernhard relayed the conversation over his radio, he put words in Paul's mouth.

The defense walked him through his own body camera transcript line by line. Paul said he was having problems with "stuff" in the garage. Bernhard reported "cameras." The officer admitted he assumed what Paul meant. Then the defense revealed his police report wasn't submitted until 2024, seven years after the crime, and ended with "No Further Action Taken" despite the fact that Bernhard drove Paul to jail that same night.

📖 CASE BACKGROUND

November 20, 2018: Firefighters found Keith Caneiro, 50, shot five times on his front lawn. Inside the burning mansion: his wife Jennifer, 45, and children Jesse and Sophia, all stabbed. The children died from smoke inhalation.

Hours earlier, a fire broke out at Paul's home eleven miles away. Prosecutors call it a "ruse" to divert suspicion. The motive: Keith had discovered Paul stealing from their businesses and family trusts, and sent an email cutting off Paul's $225,000 salary the night before.

Paul Caneiro, 59, has been jailed without bail for over seven years. If convicted, he dies in prison.
