One of my all-time favourite cakes from the Czech kitchen, this soft yeast cake is layered with sweet poppy seed filling, juicy ripe plums and a buttery crumble topping.
I’ve always loved the combination of plums and poppy seeds – a pairing I find simply delicious. Here, they shine in every bite.
I’ve kept it simple with wholesome ingredients and real flavour.

🌿 Recipe:
26 cm (10-inch) pie tin
Bake at 180 °C (160 °C fan) / 350 °F for about 35 minutes.
The dough:
200 g plain flour (spelt or wheat)
20 g fresh yeast (or 7 g dried yeast)
30 g vanilla sugar
90 ml lukewarm semi-skimmed milk
1/4 teaspoon salt
grated zest of 1/4 lemon (preferably unwaxed)
50 g melted lukewarm butter
1 egg yolk
The filling:
100 g ground poppy seeds
40 g vanilla sugar
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
150 ml semi-skimmed milk
1 heaping teaspoon plum jam
The crumble topping:
70 g plain flour (spelt or wheat)
60 g natural cane sugar
50 g cold butter
Plus:
fresh plums, halved and stoned
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon natural cane sugar
