Professor Otger Campàs has recently been appointed the chair of tissue dynamics and group-leader of the research group Physics of Embryonic Self-Organization and Morphogenesis at the TU Dresden Cluster of Excellence Physics of Life.
In his university-wide inaugural lecture “Sculpting Life: How Physics Shapes Organisms” taking place in Schönfeld-Hörsaal at TU Dresden on April 21, 2022 at 4:40 pm he will present his contribution to research, transfer and society in an intelligible way.
While many key molecular players that orchestrate embryonic development are known, the physical mechanisms underlying embryonic morphogenesis remain elusive.
Prof. Campàs’ group has developed novel techniques that allow direct quantitative measurements of mechanical forces and material properties within 3D multicellular systems. Thereby they found that the shaping of the vertebrate body axis occurs through a physical process similar to glass molding, an unexpected result that changes our current views of how tissues are physically sculpted during embryogenesis.
