My first time climbing on Granite Mountain turned into a bit more than I bargained for. A burly 5.9 crack approach pitch, a classic 5.8 route, and a chimney I definitely didn’t fit in. 😂
To reach the start of Hassayampa (5.8), we chose a mega-classic, pitch 1 of Magnolia Thunderpussy — a stout stembox dual-hand crack chimney finished off with a nice roof crux. From there, we climbed the two pitch Hassayampa which features a sweet overhanging roof traverse (a bit tight).
This was my first experience climbing at Granite Mountain, and it absolutely lived up to the hype, jaw-dropping views, incredible crack climbing, and an unforgettable day out with my buddy Scott.
