There are a lot of things that can be said about this Sonata. Certainly it is one of the most experimental works written by Beethoven and yet, its structure is so clear and improvisation based.
The second movement is one of the milestones in the art of writing variations, where Beethoven established himself to be one of the best composers of the history for his capacity of constantly developing new material, starting from a simple musical idea.
For Wim and me this represents one of the biggest achievements of this 2020, having Beethoven's last sonatas for you here on the channel in WBMP, reminds us of how wonderful of a journey it has been to learn and record them!
Everything started in March with the lockdown, when we decided to have them recorded in one session as soon as everything would have been normal again. I was coming already from the recording session of the Hammerklavier and I was exhausted, but all of this work, gave me evergy again, since including in my repertoire the last five sonatas was one of my dreams to realize as a musician!
The other one is to record Schubert's last three sonatas and trust me, it will come...next year!
Enjoy this beauty!
