In today's video we take a look at the Czech Pirc Defense, played by Tigran Petrosian! There are many strong chess openings for black against e4 including the Sicilian Defense, Caro-Kann Defense, Scandinavian Defense, and French Defense. These are all good chess openings for black, with all of them getting coverage on this YouTube chess channel! However, there is something good about playing more rare chess opening lines/variations. I talk about this in the beginning of the video, and I have reaped the benefits of this approach as I played nothing but the Hippopotamus Defense to earn the National Master title (2200+ USCF rating)!

The Czech Pirc Defense is easy to learn, a great chess opening option for chess beginners, and is simply dangerous. Many chess grandmasters have lost to it, with many other grandmasters using the Czech Pirc Defense with success. A few GMs that come to mind include Michael Adams, Vladimir Kramnik, and Varuzhan Akobian!
