Backpacking South America. Episode 1 - Her Name Was Lola

With an eventful year behind us, my roommate Pete and I decided it was time to think big and plan another international trip. We came together agreeing on a new region neither of us had explored. South America.

The two of us spent time forming a rough itinerary as to what the trip should look like. 16 days starting in Brazil, to then work our way into Peru to climb Machu Picchu. A plane ticket booked placing us in Rio de Janeiro right in time for carnival. This 16 day backpacking trip exposed us to some of the most beautiful landscapes I’ve ever seen. Challenged us once again in multiple facets, welcomed us to new friendships, and pushed us outside our comfort zone. One total night booked leaving from Denver Colorado and 16 days of adventure waiting for us.

In this episode we arrive to Copacabana and enjoy a day settling in. The two of us purchased a fast track for sunset at sugarloaf mountain (I recommend, it was worth it), and indulge in some history at the fort the next morning. That next day our guide Etzel took us into Tijuca National Park which was well worth the time and thanks to him something I’ll never forget.

This will be the first of a mini series as I share what backpacking in South America looks like. The aim is to bring together roughly 5-6 episodes that share my raw experience in a new part of the world. From the beach in Copacabana to the Iguazu waterfalls of Argentina. The historic ruins in Machu Picchu to the oasis dunes of Huacaccina. I hope you enjoy the series and that it inspires you to pick up a bag, turn on the camera and push yourself outside your comfort zone.
