In this session, Dr. Mugube and Dr. Mugume deliver an in-depth explanation of the neurobiology and genetic foundations of Parkinson’s disease. The presentation explores how key brain structures such as the motor cortex and basal ganglia work together in normal movement, and how disruptions in neurotransmitters—especially dopamine—lead to the hallmark symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

The session highlights the role of misfolded alpha-synuclein proteins and the formation of Lewy bodies in disease progression, as well as the impact of mitochondrial dysfunction and neuroinflammation.
