అసుర లోక రాజైన ప్రహ్లాదుడు తన కుమారుడు వత్స్య ఋషి కుమార్తెను (దీపావళిని) బలవంతముగ గొనిపోయెనని తెలుసుకొని ప్రహ్లాదుడు ఆశ్చర్యపొయెను,ఆ ఋషుల సమావేశములో వారికి న్యాయము చేకూరునని ,మొదటగా తన కుమారుడి చేరనుండి దీపావళిని విడిపించెదనని వారికి వాగ్దానం చేసినాడు .ప్రహ్లాదుడు ఆసుర గురు శుక్రాచార్యులవారి ఆశ్రమమునకు వెళ్ళి వారితో ఘర్షణపడి దీపావళిని విడిపించి తన రాజభవనమునకు తీసుకెళ్ళెను,దీపావళిని తన కుమారుడి చెరనుండి విముక్తురాలినిచేసెను .తర్వాత ఆమెను తన మహారాణి సంరక్షణలో ఉంచెను ,ప్రహ్లాదుడు దీపావళిని వారిరువురిలో ఆమె ఎవరిని ఇష్టపడెనని అడుగగా ,ఆమె వారిరువురు వారి వారి కార్యములందు గొప్పవారని ,వారిరువురిలో ఆమె ఎవరిని ఎంచుకొనవలెనో తేల్చుకోలేకపోయెనని ,తుది నిర్ణయము తన తండ్రికే విడిచిపెట్టనని తెలిపెను.ఆమె తండ్రి వత్స్యడు కూడా ఎటూతేల్చుకోలేక ఆ సమస్యను ప్రహ్లాదుడిని పరిష్కరించమని కోరెను .సుధన్వుడు కూడా ప్రహ్లాదుడి నిర్ణయమునకు కట్టుబడి ఉంటానని వాగ్దానం చేశెను.గురు శుక్రాచార్యులవారు విరోచనుడితో తన అమ్మమ్మగారి (కయాదు) మద్దతు కోరమని సూచించెను, అందుకు విరోచనుడు అలాగే చేశెను .అందుకు ఆమె తుది నిర్ణయం అతనికి అనుకూలముగా వచ్చునని తెలిపెను.

King Prahlad is shocked to learn from the assembly of sages that his son Virochan has abducted Sage Vatsa's daughter Deepavali. He assures them that justice would be done and that his first talk would be to free Deepavali from his son’s custody. Later he removes Deepavali from Shukracharya’s ashram to his own palace and keeps her in the custody of his queen. He is able to achieve this object only after a confrontation with Shukracharya. Once Deepavali is freed, King Prahlad asks her to select one of the two boys (Virochan and Sudhanwa) according to her liking. Deepavali expresses her inability to do so because in her opinion both are equally great in their own rights. Her father Sage Vatsa is also unable to take a decision and it is now left to Prahlad to resolve the issue justly. Sudhanwa also leavesit to Prahlad and promises to abide by his decision. Shukracharya advises Virochan to seek the support of his grandmother Kayadhu. He does so and is assured by her that in all probability the decision would be in his favour.
