File 3 “Tokui-waza Development I” (39 min)
This volume explains the process and key points for developing your tokui-waza (favorite techniques), using the kumi-te (grip fighting) and tai-sabaki (body movement) skills acquired so far.
◎ Seoi-nage (shoulder throw)
・What are common mistakes in ukemi (receiving techniques or breakfalls) during practice?
・What is the most effective entry method for smooth rotation in ai-yotsu (same-sided grip)?
・In kenka-yotsu (opposite grip), what are the points that require more attention compared to ai-yotsu?
◎ Osoto-gari (sweeping outer reap)
・How can you stabilize your upper body during the throw?
・What are the specific steps and sweeping methods when using kenka-yotsu?
Even when performing the same technique, the approach and use of grips differ between ai-yotsu and kenka-yotsu. This volume breaks down important details such as wrist movement and ashi-sabaki (footwork) to help you fully master seoi-nage and osoto-gari as your specialty techniques.
Additionally, as practical applications for competition, you’ll learn how to use renraku-waza (combinations), such as transitioning from kouchi-gari (minor inner reap) into seoi-nage, or faking seoi-nage to set up a kouchi-gari. The instruction covers timing for feints, how to identify openings, and how to effectively link techniques to create match-winning sequences.

The judo team of Tokai University has consistently produced and developed top-level athletes who represent the Japanese judo world. This instructional streaming video was created with the full cooperation of the Tokai University Judo Team, including Vice Head Coach Inoue Kosei.
Head Coach Agemizu Kenichiro, who leads the instruction, emphasizes that correctly understanding and applying the fundamentals of judo during junior high and high school is a key factor in an athlete’s growth.
This streaming video series is centered around the theme: “What judo techniques should be mastered by the end of junior high and high school?” The content begins with a review of the basics of kumi-te (grip fighting), followed by mastering tai-sabaki (body movement and positioning), and then moves on to developing your own tokui-waza (favorite techniques).
The structure is easy to follow for athletes of all levels, covering everything from basic skills to practical, competition-oriented training.
In particular, the section on tokui-waza no kōchiku (developing your favorite techniques) introduces representative judo movements:
Seoi-nage (lifting/shoulder throw)
Osoto-gari (sweeping outer reap)
Uchi-mata (inner thigh throw)
This is an ideal judo training resource, packed with essential content that should be learned during the junior high and high school years.
