File 2 “Techniques for Not Losing” (57 min)
This video begins by teaching how to grip the judogi (judo uniform) in order to transmit your power effectively to your opponent. It explains grip positions and wrist use for both lightweight and heavyweight athletes.
Next, as a defensive skill, it introduces how to avoid receiving your opponent’s attacks directly by redirecting them — a method known as uke no sabaki (defensive handling).
In the section on kumi-te (grip positioning), the video explains how to quickly establish your own grip and develop the ability needed to win grip exchanges in real matches.
It also provides instruction on ashi-waza (foot techniques) that allow athletes to win matches even without advantages in physique or strength.

Narimichi Kawano, a young leader of the prestigious Kokushikan Junior High School Judo Club
Narimichi Kawano leads the prestigious Kokushikan Junior High School Judo Club. At 34 years old, he has already guided the team to multiple national championships in Japan. His approach and training philosophy are very humble.
At first, one might think that a "champion team" is not useful as a model for others, since it was built with different levels of talent and environment. However, the Kawano Method is very orthodox. It clearly shows how basic techniques are taught and how they are developed into advanced application.
He also focuses on training athletes to think for themselves and develop their own style of Judo.
This streaming video presents a clear picture of his philosophy, showing how he guides students from beginner level all the way to national champions.
Please take a look at this video, which contains a complete training philosophy aimed at developing top-level Judoka from the beginner stage.
