!!!HEAT TRANSFER EXPIMENT WITH PAPER!!!

Materials Needed:
~ Scissors
~ Paper
~ Clay
~ Pencil
~ Sewing Needle
~ Candle
~ Lighter
~ Adult (Younger Scientists)

Step 1) Cut a spiral shape out of the piece of paper.

Step 2) Place a pencil sticking up in some clay and place a sewing needle in the pencils eraser.

Step 3) Balance the paper spiral on the point of the sewing needle.

Step 4) Place a candle under the spiral and using a lighter to light the candle. What happens to the paper spiral?

HOW DOES IT WORK:
The 2nd law of thermodynamics states that heat energy transfers naturally from areas with faster vibrating molecules to areas with slower vibrating molecules. When you light candle the heat energy in the chemical reaction is transferred to the air molecules in the room. You may have herd that heat rises, but heat doesn't actually rise. Instead fast vibrating molecules have a lower density and are pushed up and out of the way of slower vibrating molecules which have higher density and get pulled down by gravity. As the faster moving molecules are pushed out of the way, they exert a force on the paper snake and the snake rotates. This transfer of heat energy through a fluid (such as air) is called convection.
You can transfer heat energy from areas of slow moving molecules to faster moving molecules but this requires work, such as with a heat pump. Heat pumps works by using a refrigerant gas which is pumped through a system. A compressor compresses the gas into a liquid which absorbs the heat in your house. As the liquid absorbs this energy it begins to turn back into a gas where it pumped to and evaporator. The evaporate fan forces the heat energy via convection into the environment. the gas then returns back to the compressor to be compressed back into a liquid. To heat up your house the system switches into reverse where the liquid is sent the compressor to absorb heat energy which is pumped into your home.
If you left your refrigerator door open on a hot day you would actually heat up your house.
