Vila de Arronches

Terra raiana portuguesa no distrito de Portalegre, região Alentejo e sub-região do Alto Alentejo.
O município é limitado a norte pelo município de Portalegre, a leste pelo de Campo Maior, a sul pelo de Elvas, a oeste pelo de Monforte e a nordeste pela Espanha.
A “forte Arronches”, assim cantada por Luís de Camões n’Os Lusíadas, mantém hoje visíveis os traços de vila estratégica e de valor militar. Duas das fases históricas mais bélicas, a Reconquista aos Mouros e as Guerras da Restauração, deixaram aqui importante testemunho, das torres medievais do Castelo aos vários panos amuralhados do séc. XVII.
Torre Medieval do Castelo de Arronches
As origens da estrutura primitiva deste castelo não são conhecidas, o Castelo de Arronches terá sido mandado restaurar por D.Dinis, em 1310. O castelo ficou arruinado por motivo de uma explosão no paiol da pólvora e mais tarde num ataque Espanhol.
A Fonte do Vassalo é uma construção do Sec. XVIII encimada pelo escudo de Portugal, com dois painéis de azulejos retratando cenas da vida agrícola e os lazeres da fidalguia.
Belo património histórico como o Convento de Nossa Senhora da Luz, a Igreja Matriz, a Torre de Menagem, as Atalaias, as famosas Fontes como a de Neptuno, de Elvas e do Vassalo, além da Ponte Internacional do Marco, casario branco e também a gastronomia local.
Ao passear por Arronches percebe-se como a cal e a cor unificam as torres medievais, arcos góticos, janelas manuelinas e balcões barrocos.
Atalaias de Arronches
Locais de vigia, as atalaias eram maciças no primeiro terço inferior e só a meia altura se abria a sua única entrada acedendo-se a ela de fora, por uma escada de madeira que depois era recolhida. Essa entrada dava para uma escada de pedra que descia para uma pequena câmara onde se abrigavam os soldados de vigia, subindo depois para a almenara (do árabe al-manarâ, "farol, lanterna, local onde está a luz") um terraço superior.

A Portuguese border town in the district of Portalegre, Alentejo region and sub-region of Alto Alentejo.
The municipality is bordered to the north by the municipality of Portalegre, to the east by Campo Maior, to the south by Elvas, to the west by Monforte and to the northeast by Spain.

The "strong Arronches", as sung by Luís de Camões in Os Lusíadas, still retains visible traces of a strategic town of military value. Two of the most warlike historical phases, the Reconquista from the Moors and the Restoration Wars, left important evidence here, from the medieval towers of the Castle to the various walled sections of the 17th century.

The origins of the primitive structure of this castle are unknown; Arronches Castle is believed to have been ordered to be restored by King Dinis in 1310. The castle was ruined due to an explosion in the gunpowder magazine and later by a Spanish attack.

The Vassalo Fountain is an 18th-century construction topped by the Portuguese coat of arms, with two tile panels depicting scenes of agricultural life and the leisure activities of the nobility.
Beautiful historical heritage such as the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Luz, the Parish Church, the Keep, the Watchtowers, the famous fountains such as the Neptune Fountain, the Elvas Fountain and the Vassalo Fountain, in addition to the Marco International Bridge, white houses and also the local gastronomy.
While strolling through Arronches, one notices how whitewash and color unify the medieval towers, Gothic arches, Manueline windows and Baroque balconies.
Arronches Watchtowers
Lookout points, the watchtowers were massive in the first lower third and only halfway up did their single entrance open, accessing it from the outside, by a wooden ladder that was later retracted. This entrance led to a stone staircase that descended to a small chamber where the soldiers on guard were sheltered, then ascending to the menagerie (from the Arabic al-manarâ, "lighthouse, lantern, place where the light is"), an upper terrace.
