Back on the trolley rebuild, I close out the six roof holes on the shell using a simple combo: baking soda and CA (super glue). I back the openings with painter’s tape, load baking soda into each hole (eyedropper works), then wick in CA so it cures into a hard, plastic-like fill. A quick note: I tried a blunt needle for glue control—didn’t love it. Distilled water helps kick the cure if you’re impatient.
From there, it’s all about leveling: scrape flush, then wet-sand through 400, 800, 1000, and 1500 grits until the roof feels smooth under a fingertip. For the last touch, I skim with Vallejo plastic putty and sand again. Result: a clean roof that’s ready for primer. I also recap stripping the old paint with LA’s Totally Awesome cleaner—fast, cheap, and easier on plastic than brake fluid.
What’s your go-to method for filling larger holes in plastic models? Drop it in the comments—I’m always testing ideas.
