n this video, I walk you through my process for stripping paint from an HO scale trolley body, starting with the method I’ve used for years—91% isopropyl alcohol—and what happened when it didn’t work on this particular mid-70s model. After a 24-hour soak with no results, I switched to something new: LA’s Totally Awesome cleaner, straight from the Dollar Tree. To my surprise, within an hour the paint was peeling away, leaving the plastic in perfect condition.
I’ll show you the setup, the tools I used (including a soft brush), and how I salvaged and reused the cleaning solution to save money. We’ll talk about why I prefer this over brake fluid, how it’s safer for the model, and why it’s now my go-to paint remover for older, stubborn finishes.
Whether you’re rebuilding a vintage trolley or refreshing a newer model, this simple, low-cost method might just save your next project.
