Celestine Nyangweso was born in Butere and is the youngest in her family. Tragically, she lost both parents at a young age and was raised by her aunt until she completed Class 8. From Form One to Form Four, her brother took over her care.
While still emotionally immature, Celestine entered into a relationship that led to an unplanned pregnancy. She eventually left the relationship and raised her child at her brother’s home. Later, she moved to Nairobi with the hope of joining college, as promised by someone who had offered to help her. However, upon arrival, she was told she would be working as a househelp instead.
In Nairobi, Celestine joined a church and became a devoted member. She met her future husband while traveling back from her cousin’s burial in the village—they exchanged phone numbers on the bus. Three months later, he called to reintroduce himself, and they began dating.
Eventually, they decided to take the relationship seriously and planned to get married. Their church advised them to remain celibate until marriage. At one point, Celestine noticed a red flag—he exchanged contact information with one of her friends—but she chose to forgive him out of love.
As preparations for the dowry ceremony began, Celestine contributed financially to support the process. When it came time to plan the wedding, she found herself borrowing money and even selling items from her business because her fiancé claimed he didn’t have enough funds.
On the day of the wedding, Celestine discovered that her fiancé had betrayed her by sleeping with his ex. Despite the heartbreak, she went ahead with the ceremony, hoping he would change.
Now, she shares her story—what she endured in her marriage and the difficult decision to finally part ways with her husband.
