Mega Gengar is regarded as the strongest Pokemon to use for hardcore raid challenges according to an analysis in TSR, in fact, it is also frequently used for duo here. However, a strong raid counter usually has nothing to do with their strength on defense side - as raid boss. And that is also true for Mega Gengar.
Mega Gengar, as a raid boss, only offers 169 Defense, which is similar to Darkrai and Raikou, in which both are not known for their defensiveness.
Even worse for Mega Gengar, as a raid boss it is weak to Psychic/Ghost/Dark/Ground type. While there is nothing particularly broken for Dark/Ground type raid counters, both Psychic/Ghost type consists of the strongest raid counters in this game, namely Shadow Mewtwo, and Mega Gengar itself.
This coupled with its mild defense made it possible to be solo'd rather comfortably as the new T4.5 raid boss even without relying on weather boost. While its STAB moves are scary, under this moveset Mega Gengar doesn't pose much threat towards Shadow Mewtwo and turned this to a trivial solo.
Overall this solo is more or less similar to Mega Venusaur solo in Windy, it is still 3 Shadow Mewtwo and one relobby. Despite the bad execution throughout the raid this is still done pretty safely. It is also noteworthy that 2/3 of my Shadow Mewtwo missed the Psycho Cut breakpoint, so in practice it doesn't have that much difference to non-candyXL Shadow Mewtwos.
Team used:
CP 4615 Shadow Mewtwo Lv50 - 15/12/8 Psycho Cut/Psystrike
CP 4605 Shadow Mewtwo Lv50 - 10/13/13 Psycho Cut/Psystrike
CP 4550 Shadow Mewtwo Lv50 - 13/9/8 Psycho Cut/Psystrike
CP 4286 Shadow Metagross Lv50 - 15/15/15 Zen Headbutt/Psychic
It is not the end for Mega Gengar, as one of the most used Pokemon in this channel there are more solo/duo planned for it.
