After spending some time in Taipei, Taiwan it didn't take us long to find a favorite restaurant in the city specializing in Taiwanese soup dumplings known locally as xiao long bao 小笼包 - 小籠包. Heading to the original Din Tai Fung (鼎泰豐 - 鼎泰丰) we placed an order for Xiaolongbao along with various other Taiwanese dishes that caught our eye. Below is the complete list of what we had for our meal:
Xiaolongbao or Xiao long bao (小笼包 - 小籠包) = Taiwanese soup dumplings
Oolong Tea (烏龍茶 - 乌龙茶) = Free tea with our meal

Arrival & Anticipation at Din Tai Fung 🏮🍽️
The video opens with the hosts arriving in rainy Taipei (臺北市) on a “food mission,” specifically seeking out the legendary Din Tai Fung (鼎泰豐) for its famous soup dumplings. Aware of the restaurant’s popularity and long lines, they arrive at opening (10 AM) to find about fifty people already queued up, but are pleased to be handed menus while waiting, allowing them to plan their feast ahead of time.
Ordering & Menu Highlights 📜🥢
Once inside, the pair is seated quickly and receives complimentary Oolong tea (烏龍茶 - 乌龙茶) and fresh ginger. They decide to order the restaurant’s signature pork xiaolongbao (小笼包 - 小籠包, 10 pieces), a sweet taro xiaolongbao (芋泥小包, 5 pieces), a bowl of noodles with spicy sesame and peanut sauce (擔擔麵), and sticky rice wrapped with pork (likely in a lotus leaf). The menu is extensive and tempting, making selection a challenge.
The Story of Din Tai Fung 📖🇹🇼
While waiting for food, they share a bit of history about Din Tai Fung: originally a cooking oil shop, it pivoted to selling soup dumplings when oil sales declined, eventually gaining worldwide fame with locations across Taiwan, Asia, and beyond.
Eating Xiaolongbao Like a Pro 🥄🥟
The star of the meal, the pork xiaolongbao, arrives, and the hosts excitedly walk viewers through the proper way to enjoy it: mix soy sauce and vinegar (3:1), dip the dumpling, place it on a spoon, poke a hole to release the broth, add ginger, and eat it all in one bite. They marvel at the delicate skin, the juiciness of the soup inside, and the meticulous technique (each dumpling is pleated exactly 18 times!). The dumplings exceed all expectations—juicy, savory, and beautifully textured.
Savoring Side Dishes: Noodles & Sticky Rice 🍜🍖
Next, they sample the noodles in spicy sesame-peanut sauce, which are a surprising highlight: dense, chewy, sweet, and spicy, with the nutty flavor shining through. The hosts admit they nearly skipped ordering the noodles but are blown away by the taste. The sticky rice with pork (糯米雞 - 糯米鸡) is another winner, featuring juicy, flavorful pork with just the right amount of fat to melt in your mouth, complemented perfectly by the sticky rice.
A Sweet Finish: Taro Xiaolongbao & Lasting Impressions 🍠🍬
For dessert, the hosts share taro xiaolongbao—steamed dumplings with a sweet, creamy taro root filling. They note the unique flavor and vibrant purple color, likening the taste to sweetened manioc and finding it a satisfying way to end the meal.
Service, Value, & Final Thoughts 🧾⭐
The experience is rounded out by attentive service, unlimited tea, and an affordable price—528 Taiwan dollars (about $16.50 USD) for four dishes and tea for two people. They express high satisfaction with the quality, value, and overall dining experience, even picking up a set of Din Tai Fung chopsticks as a souvenir for their future home.
Conclusion & Recommendations 👏🏮
The hosts highly recommend Din Tai Fung to food lovers visiting Taipei, promising to return before leaving the city. Their video makes it clear why this restaurant is a culinary institution—perfect for those seeking authentic, high-quality Taiwanese dim sum.
