Christchurch Rubbish (

Ever since my video of #46 mid-last year, I've been wanting to chuck up some footage featuring one of the dedicated rubbish trucks in my hometown. The Christchurch fleet doesn't particularly interest me and I did it to death back in the day, so capturing this footage was put off month after month until one dreary Friday afternoon when I finally set out with plans of documenting one of the red trucks in action. It took me a bloody age to run into the right truck, my struggle being following empty bins only to find another generically signed unit at the end of the trail. Eventually, I spotted the featured #21 in my rear-view mirror, chucked a u-turn, and caught up with the easy-going driver who wasn't bothered by my presence.

While the original 2009 fleet was made up of 10 odd trucks with red bodies, these days only five feature the eye-catching paint job, although a couple of the generic ones have had dedicated rubbish signage slapped on in recent months. From memory, I also filmed this truck years back, when it was young and looking in much better shape. These replacement GenVs arrived in mid-2016, so have just rolled into their sixth year of service. The contract has been extended until 2029, and Council requires (or at least used to) trucks to be retired after seven years, so perhaps some newer units will begin to pop up after next year. I can imagine some of the GenVs will make it till contracts end, however, there are a couple that are starting to look quite rough. I'd certainly like to see some new recycling trucks hit the road (with fingers crossed they keep them yellow!).
