This happened when my friends and I were still in college, back when we thought the forest was just a big, empty playground where the worst thing you could run into was bad weather. That October, we chose the Olympic National Forest. Not the tourist trails, not the mapped scenic routes—no, we wanted the forgotten places. The places locals only mentioned when they were warning you not to go.
