「Learn Japanese」 NOUN と(同じで/違って) CLAUSE as “(just like/unlike) NOUN, CLAUSE”

This grammar pattern is used to make a comparison or a contrast between two things, NOUN and the subject in CLAUSE. The two words 同じ and 違う, which mean "same, just like” and “different, unlike” respectively are used. Lastly, the particle と is implemented to indicate the reciprocal relationship between NOUN and the subject of CLAUSE.

Example(s):

うさぎと同じで、こうもりは長いみみをしている。
Usagi to onaji de, koumori wa nagai mimi o shite iru,
(Bats have long ears just like rabbits.)

アメリカは多くの国と同じで、たくさんの環境問題がある。
America wa ooku no kuni to onaji de, takusan no kankyou mondai ga aru.
(The same as many other countries, America has a lot of environmental problems.)

バドミントンはテニスと違って、ボールの代わりにシャトルを使います。
Badminton wa tenis to chigatte, ball no kawari ni shuttle o tsukaimasu.
(Unlike tennis, badminton uses a shuttle instead of a ball.)

ご両親と違って、彼女は赤髪をしています。
Goryoushin to chigatte, kanojo wa akagami o shiteimasu.
(Unlike her parents, her hair is red.)
