I love building floater frames for my small paintings on panel. It's a lot of work and I don't do it all the time, but I welcome the opportunity to do the work when an online buyer makes the request to have a piece framed.
In this video I take you through the steps of building the frame. You're not seeing all the action but you might get enough information to make a frame yourself once the steps are shown and explained.
If you have a good lumber yard near you you might be able to get kiln dried pine 1" x 2" and door stop (it's 1.5 inch wide wood stripping). These will work beautifully instead of the milled pieces I show in the video. A table saw is not necessary if you can buy those sizes.
The V nails I refer to in the video are a specialty item often used by picture framers. Stores will not carry those but you can order them online. Or you can phone a picture framer in your area and ask if you could get a handful of V nails from them just to test them out. I'm really impressed with V nails...the work so well for making precision joins!
This video takes you to the end of the building and sanding process. The next video will how how I paint and finish the frame, install the painting, and hang the work.
Some of my paintings which are framed in this way are at paintbox.etsy.com and harrystooshinoff.com
