Freestyling and using metaphors/similes is going to be more difficult as many people have a hard time just writing similes and metaphors to begin with. For this video, I’m going to specifically cover how to freestyle with more similes and metaphors.
Get Your Mind Used To It
As with any other freestyle skill, you need to be have a strong basis in the specific skill you want to freestyle. If you can’t already write similes and metaphors you need to practice them more. If you can’t write a simile about pretty much any word or idea on the spot, then you won’t be able to freestyle it. Either way, it doesn’t hurt to practice. You can do this by picking a random word then writing either a simile or a metaphor about it.
Lead Yourself Similes
Another way you can get similes into your freestyles is to verbally force yourself into it. Similes have like or as in them, so you can throw up something like I’m the best like….and see what your mind fills in.
This is going to introduce some pressure to finish the line. That might seem stressful, but you’d be surprised at what you’re able to come up with. Worst case scenario, you end with something a bit off, get some practice, and keep going. By leading yourself, however, you force yourself to at least give it a shot.
Metaphor Lead
You can do the same thing with a metaphor. Here, the easiest way to lead yourself is to pick a noun then compare it to another noun and focus on the connections. So for example you might say, she was an angel and go from there coming up with other ways you can connect that topic. I would immediately try to think of connecting words so for example the next word in my mind is halo.
So you’d just continue playing off that with: you could always see her halo. If you’ve done some of the word association drills I’ve talked about in the past, they’ll come in handy here. It’s essentially the same thing, but comparing two nouns together instead of simply looking for any sort of association.
