Steubenville accelerates efforts to aid homeless amid cold snap

The city of Steubenville is expediting efforts to provide resources to the homeless as cold weather sets in.

City Manager Jim Mavromatis says officials are working with local non-profit organizations to provide food and shelter.

"We have some food pantries and areas that are open up to people that need food," Mavromatis said.

He added that discussions are underway with the Community Action Council in Columbiana County to potentially reopen the Urban Mission facility.

City leaders acknowledge the challenge of addressing homelessness.

"Every city deals with this issue in different manners,” Mavromatis said. “It's very difficult because there’s no set numbers here. We can go for several weeks and you don't see anyone walking the city, or it gets extremely cold and we may see some, so every city is plagued by this, not just us. I've seen a lot of other cities worse than this."
