When you hear of the town Maldon in Essex England, most foodies will of course instantly think of sea salt, Maldon's flaked pyramids of sodium are by now world famous and indeed rightly so. Maldon, however not content with producing some of the world's finest salt, can also lay claim to producing some of the finest oysters I have ever tasted. It also happens to be the town oysterman Mr Bobby Groves, purveyor of many of the finest oysters in the British Isles hails from. When Bobby isn't working his oyster cart at London's famously ritzy Chiltern Firehouse hotel, or busy playing banjo for Essex's finest singer songwriter Beans On Toast, he can be found busy writing. His latest book 'Oyster Isles A journey Through Britain and Ireland's Oysters' Is one of the most superb gastronomic centric works I have read since Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's original River Cottage book. With history and facts akin to the writings of Bill Bryson but with a romance all of its own. This book indeed was the inspiration behind this whole Global Food Quest coast to coast adventure.
And so back to our episode we find ourselves in Maldon Essex on the edge of the Blackwater estuary at the Maldon Oyster Company with the man himself. Mr Bobby Groves. Our guide and fixer all things oyster.
