Recorded May 8, 2025. In our continuing exploration of how the Gemara frames issues of marriage, family life, and the Jewish life-cycle, we looked at passages from tractates Kiddushin (7b), Yevamot (62b, 63b), and Sanhedrin (19b) which describe the core elements of the Jewish marriage ceremony, both the blessing of betrothal ("Birkat Eirusin") and the blessing of marriage (in Gemara, "Birkat Chatanim," commonly known today as the Sheva Berakhot (7 Benedictions).
After deconstructing the liturgy of the marriage ceremony, we explored the first mitzvah incumbent on married couples, known in Hebrew as "p'ru u'r'vu," or "Be fruitful and multiply," and examined the meaning, and the limits, of the Torah's directive to have children, as understood by the Rabbis.
