In this video Dr. McCarthy discusses how depression is one of the most poorly managed chronic health problems in the US. It is NOT a serotonin deficiency! We take more antidepressants than any other country, yet the number of people being diagnosed with depression continues to grow. Mental health and Gut / Brain health are tied together. SSRI antidepressants (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are useless as a treatment for depression if the problem lies in the gut brain connection (gut brain axis).
