Pause squats can be a lifter's best friend when used strategically. They can improve the skill component of squatting and help teach us how to move efficiently.
Arguably, one of the toughest aspects of any heavy squat is the transition from the eccentric to the concentric movement pattern. If we can build better mechanics in one of the toughest positions of the squat, then we'll strengthen our abilities to move heavier loads.
Plus, we all have sticking points at various positions, so if we're not dialed in with all of the aspects that can us to miss squats, then we can hedge our bets to move weight efficiently.

Personally, I love pause squats and constantly use them with my clients and lifters to help improve the strength of their lifts and build better mechanics.
On top of that, my coach has me going through a nasty pause mesocycle at the moment (shout out to Adam at N1 Training) and they've reminded me how much I love the challenge of pause and tempo work.
The biggest thing with pause squats is contextualizing your needs, goals, and then using them to coincide with your lifting to produce higher outcomes when it's game time.
