First MTB Ride of 2026 🚵‍♂️ | Nyeri Flow Route Recce with Ken Genius | Not As Scary As It Looks 😄

Kicking off 2026 the best way we know how — on the mountain bike 🚵‍♂️🔥

On 4th January 2026, I linked up with Ken Ngure of Ken Genius Bike Shop (Nyeri) for a route recce of an upcoming ride we’ll be doing together with the Thika Road Mountain Bikers on January 11th.

This was a proper Nyeri-style ride:

Total distance: 87 km

Total ascent: 1,908 m

Highest point: 2,279 m ASL

Lowest point: 1,654 m ASL

Despite Nyeri being mostly tarmacked, this route is largely off-road, with only about 15 km of tarmac. The rest is a mix of rocky sections, gravel roads, and super steep gradients that will test your legs — especially early on.

⚠️ Heads-up on the brutality (but don’t panic 😄):

The first 40 km are the toughest

By 36 km, you’ve already climbed about 1,200 m

Two main climbs stand out:

4.15 km at 4.5%

5.3 km at 5.6%

The remaining climbs later in the ride are short but punchy (around 2 km or less)

That said — and this is important — this ride is meant to be friendly, especially for our visiting friends from Thika Road MTB. Yes, the elevation profile may look scary. Yes, Nyeri climbs are honest. But trust us… It’s never that serious in this life 😄 Pace yourself, enjoy the views, and we'll ride together.
