Alter do Chão é um município português pertencente ao Distrito de Portalegre.
Vila de origem romana, Alter do Chão fica no coração do Alto Alentejo. Este é também um Concelho rico em monumentos históricos, entre os quais se destaca o emblemático Castelo, mandado construir por D. Pedro I, que embeleza o centro da vila e convida a um retorno à época medieval.
Alter do Chão obteve o estatuto de concelho em 1232, por foral atribuído pelo Mestre Vicente, Bispo Chanceler do rei D. Sancho II, a quem estava entregue a acção povoadora do território da Diocese da Guarda, à qual Alter do Chão então pertencia.
Outros reis concederam foral a Alter do Chão. Em 1270 deixa de estar sob a influência do Bispado da Guarda e recebe novo foral de D. Dinis em 1293. Entre outros privilégios, D. Dinis estabelecia nesse foral que Alter do Chão não seria dada em senhorio a ninguém. Em 1349 ocorre o episódio dos 12 Melhores de Alter, que mediante queixa ao rei se opuseram ao abuso do direito de aposentadoria por parte de um nobre, queixa que teve o atendimento do rei, mas pelo qual o nobre se iria vingar com a morte de alterenses.
Na sequência da doação de Alter do Chão ao condestável Nuno Álvares Pereira (1360–1431) por D. João I, é desfeita a regalia que D. Dinis havia estabelecido da vila não sair da coroa. Com o casamento em 1401 da única filha de Nuno Álvares Pereira, D. Beatriz Pereira de Alvim, com D. Afonso I, Duque de Bragança, Alter do Chão passa a fazer parte do senhorio da Casa de Bragança. Uma lápide com inscrição de 1432, refere a conclusão de obras no castelo ordenadas por D. Fernando, segundo Duque de Bragança, marca a propriedade deste pela Casa de Bragança.
Com o propósito de fornecer cavalos para a picaria real, em 1747 é fundada na Coutada do Arneiro a Coudelaria de Alter, com a designação de Reais Manadas. A eguada e garanhões eram propriedade da Coroa e a coutada era da Casa de Bragança, a casa de família do rei.

Alter do Chão is a Portuguese municipality belonging to the District of Portalegre.
A village of Roman origin, Alter do Chão is in the heart of Alto Alentejo. This is also a Municipality rich in historical monuments, including the emblematic Castle, built by D. Pedro I, which beautifies the center of the town and invites you to return to medieval times.
Alter do Chão obtained the status of a municipality in 1232, by charter granted by Mestre Vicente, Bishop Chancellor of King D. Sancho II, to whom the action of populating the territory of the Diocese of Guarda, to which Alter do Chão then belonged, was entrusted.
Other kings granted a charter to Alter do Chão. In 1270 it ceased to be under the influence of the Bishopric of Guarda and received a new charter from D. Dinis in 1293. Among other privileges, D. Dinis established in this charter that Alter do Chão would not be given as a lordship to anyone. In 1349, the episode of the 12 Best of Alter occurred, who, through a complaint to the king, opposed the abuse of the right to retirement by a nobleman, a complaint that was attended to by the king, but for which the nobleman would take revenge with the death of alterenses.
Following the donation of Alter do Chão to the constable Nuno Álvares Pereira (1360–1431) by D. João I, the privilege that D. Dinis had established for the town not to leave the crown was canceled. With the marriage in 1401 of Nuno Álvares Pereira's only daughter, D. Beatriz Pereira de Alvim, with D. Afonso I, Duke of Bragança, Alter do Chão became part of the lordship of Casa de Bragança. A tombstone with an inscription from 1432, refers to the completion of works on the castle ordered by D. Fernando, second Duke of Bragança, marking his ownership by the House of Bragança.
With the purpose of supplying horses for the royal stable, in 1747 the Stud Farm of Alter was founded in Coutada do Arneiro, under the name Reais Manadas. The mare and stallions were owned by the Crown and the coutada was owned by the House of Bragança, the king's family home.
