What is Degenerative Scoliosis?

Degenerative scoliosis is very common among adult patients. There are cases where the adult patient has had scoliosis since their teenage years but was never diagnosed. These cases are called adolescent scoliosis in the adult stage.

The main causes of adult degenerative scoliosis are changes in bone density, which leads to slight compression and fractures of the spine. Another reason is that the adult patient could have trauma occur to the spine. This trauma causes a spinal shift and a curve to develop. It is important to note that adolescent scoliosis in the adult stage could also turn into degenerative scoliosis. This degeneration is triggered by how fast the curve progresses.

In both cases, the adult patient could present the following symptoms:

Loss of height: the patient's spine is compressed and shortened as a result of the condition.
Lower back pain: this could worsen as the curve gets bigger. In some patients, the pain can increase in the evening and reduce in the morning after resting.
Neck pain
Headaches
Limited mobility and flexibility of the spine
