The Moki Dugway and Valley of the Gods: The Moki Dugway, is a 3-mile gravel shelf road on Utah Highway 261, which connects Highway 95 with highway 163 and Mexican Hat. The Dugway, with its steep hairpin switchbacks and narrow 11% grades, can be intimidating, but it is a scenic and fun drive, as it descends from the top of Cedar Mesa at 6,425 feet to the valley floor 1,200 feet below. The Moki Dugway was carved into the face of Cedar Mesa, in the 1950’s, to haul uranium ore from the Happy Jack Mine to the processing mill near Mexican Hat. The term “moki” is derived from the Spanish word “moqui” which was used by Spanish explorers to describe the Pueblo Indians found in this region.
Valley of the Gods is a picturesque area in South East Utah, near Mexican Hat. It presents a spectacular panorama of impressive fins, tall pinnacles and massive buttes, that are reminiscent of those found in the more famous, “Monument Valley”, located on the Navajo Nation, in Arizona. This well-maintained and easy 17-mile loop, through BLM land, offers numerous campsites and is a worthy bucket list destination.
