Immunization of adolescents with the HPV vaccine induces durable protection against the HPV types targeted by the vaccine, and the current rate of vaccine uptake in the U.S. has also produced significant herd protection. The vaccine protects against several different cancer types, including cervical cancer and HPV-positive oropharynx cancer (which is even more common in the US than certival cancer, and affects more men than women). Although the vaccine prevents the development of new HPV infections, it does not clear established infections, which explains the importance of adolescent vaccination prior to sexual debut and cervical cancer screening for young women. Dr. Lowy provides updates on vaccination uptakes, upcoming single dose vaccine, and discusses successes in various communities.
