Hareesa is a traditional slow-cooked dish made with wheat, lentils, and tender chicken, cooked until thick and creamy. This nourishing and comforting recipe is especially popular in winter and during special occasions. Rich in flavor and protein, Hareesa is best served hot with lemon, fried onions, and fresh herbs.
🧾 Ingredients
Main Ingredients
Chicken – ½ kg
Whole wheat (cracked wheat / دلیہ) – 1 cup (soaked overnight)
Mixed lentils (chana dal, moong dal, masoor) – ½ cup
Onion – 2 medium (sliced)
Garlic paste – 1 tbsp
Ginger paste – 1 tbsp
Yogurt – ½ cup
Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
Red chili powder – 1 tsp
Coriander powder – 1 tsp
Salt – to taste
Cooking oil or ghee – ½ cup
Water / stock – as needed
Garnishing
Fried onions
Lemon wedges
Fresh coriander
Green chilies
Garam masala – ½ tsp
👩🍳 Method
Wash and soak wheat and lentils overnight or at least 4–5 hours.
In a large pot, heat oil or ghee and fry onions until golden brown.
Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté well.
Add chicken, turmeric, red chili, coriander powder, and salt. Cook until chicken changes color.
Add yogurt and cook until oil separates.
Add soaked wheat and lentils, pour enough water, and cook on low flame for 2–3 hours (or pressure cook 45 minutes).
Stir and mash continuously until mixture becomes thick and smooth.
Adjust consistency with water if needed.
Sprinkle garam masala and mix well.
Serve hot with fried onions, lemon, and green chilies.
