🎵 Nicolas de Grigny - KYRIE en taille à 5 (Livre d’Orgue)

Roberto Bertero performs Nicolas de Grigny’s Kyrie en taille à 5, a page of extraordinary spiritual intensity and refined French Baroque counterpoint.

Nicolas de Grigny (1672-1703) was one of the finest French organists and composers of his time, though his short life prevented him from enjoying widespread fame. His current fame is almost entirely due to the "Premier Livre d'orgue”, published in 1699, a monumental collection of his entire organ production.

The "Kyrie en taille à 5" belongs to the Mass included in this volume, constructed according to the French liturgical organ style of the time, where each section of the liturgy was rendered in multiple verses with different registrations and contrapuntal notations. The term "en taille à 5" indicates that the main melody (the Kyrie chant) is entrusted to the tenor register (taille), while the polyphonic elaboration unfolds in five voices.

It is a work of intense spirituality, characterized by dense and rich writing, combining the severity of counterpoint with typically French elegance. It's no surprise that Johann Sebastian Bach himself was deeply moved by it: he transcribed Grigny's entire book by hand to study it and use it as a model.
