In Part 5 of our Canada Road Trip – Maximized Travel series, our family arrives in Augusta, Maine, to tour the impressive Maine State House. Designed by renowned architect Charles Bulfinch and completed in 1832, the building is a centerpiece of Augusta’s history and government.
During the tour, we learn fascinating facts about Maine’s heritage, including its state motto, “Dirigo” (I Lead), symbolizing Maine’s independent spirit. We also discover that Augusta became the capital in 1827, chosen for its central location, and that the State House dome, topped with a golden statue of Minerva, has long been a landmark of the city.
Walking through the halls, we see portraits of past governors and learn how Maine’s legislature continues to shape the state’s future. After the tour, we enjoy Augusta’s small-town charm and riverside scenery, adding another meaningful stop to our family road trip to Canada.
