I was terrified of bugs. When I was five, a ladybug mistook me for an aphid and bit me. I had to be hospitalized for two weeks. When I was seven, a dragonfly mistook me for a lily-pad and landed on my head. I needed three years of intensive counseling. When I was sixteen, a praying mantis mistook me for her mate, and I’d rather not talk about that.

I was taking the bus to Entomophobes Anonymous. My favourite time of the year had come: fall. The weather was cooling, the trees were losing their leaves, the grass was dying. And the insects had all gone back to Hades where they belonged. To pass the time, I took out my DS and booted up Animal Crossing. I liked to catch bugs and throw them in the garbage. When I had a few wastebaskets full, I looked up as the bus stopped and let on a passenger. A young woman, green eyes, pinkish-blonde hair. Her outfit and accoutrements did not register in my mind until she was already walking down the aisle between the seats.

Two bug catcher nets towered and swayed above her head like the banners samurai used to affix to their armour during the Sengoku Period. A safari hat dotted with vibrant badges and pins sat atop her head. A small book entitled ‘Insect Encyclopedia’ bulged in her shirt pocket. She wore the mid-thigh shorts that the British Army used to wear during the African Campaign in World War Two. A bandolier hung with mason jars, and it was in these that I saw what I feared most. Insects, whose names I could only imagine were horrible and vicious sounding, scratched mindlessly at the glass, crawling over one another, clacking their mandibles, respiring through their abdomen, listening with ears on their knees, thinking their dark and insidious insect thoughts, plotting my downfall and staring balefully with their larval eyes.

I began to sweat as she came nearer. There were many seats open on the bus. She could have sat anywhere. I prayed and prayed. I looked out the window and caught sight of my reflection in the glass. My face was pale-green, eyes underlined with a bruised-purple hue. I couldn’t bear the sight and looked back down the aisle. The young woman was standing next to my seat, smiling down at me, mouth open. She looked down at the empty seat next to me then back at my face and raised and lowered her eyebrows suggestively. I swallowed what felt like a glob of molasses and nodded.

“Thanks!!!” she said, swinging herself into the seat next to me, the mason jars clanging and rattling as she did.

I didn’t reply. I just stared straight ahead like a hostage with a knife to his neck. The bus lurched into motion, and I gripped the edge of my seat until the tendons in my hand stood out like tennis racket strings.

“Do you like bugs!!?”

I could feel the heat of her gaze. The right side of my face felt like it was melting, but I kept staring straight ahead. “No.”

There was a bumpy silence as the bus went over a few potholes.

“Why not?!!”

“I just don’t.”

“That’s not a reason!!! Here, look!!!”

From the corner of my eye, I could see her grabbing a mason jar from her bandolier. My eyes grew wide as hockey pucks.

“This little guy here is called ‘The Man-eating Tiger Nymph’!!! Look how sweet he is!!!” She held something with many spindly legs and gruesome pincers that I dared not look at directly. “You see that long pointy thing!!?” She paused and leaned closer, shielding her mouth with her hand. “That’s not his stinger, if you know what I mean.”

I started screaming. I screamed like a billy goat that had got its head stuck in a wood fence. Yanking manically on the stop cord above the window, I couldn’t wait for the bus to stop. I bust out the glass with my elbow and defenestrated myself.

Back on the bus, the young woman looked out the open window, the passing air flaring her pinkish-blonde hair, and watched the strange man tumble across the asphalt.

“What?!! It’s just his antenna!!!”
