Mechanical tension, muscle damage, and metabolic stress, are factors responsible for initiating the hypertrophic response to resistance exercise, but, it's important to know that not all exercises allow optimal muscle loading and optimal stimulation, some exercises are high energy cost for little reward, while other provide optimal muscle loading with less resistance and less energy cost.
