This is part of my weekly Sunday series of Jazz Hymn arrangements. Today's video is "Will the Circle Be Unbroken", a jazz treatment of a hymn by Charles H. Gabriel and Ada R. Habershon. The arrangement can be found in the Hal Leonard collection called Jazz Piano Solos in the volume: "Gospel". The arrangements were written by Brent Edstrom.
Very blues-y treatment of this hymn. Hymns are such a rich source of melodies--anything that is sung by human voice. As I have been doing these Brent Edstrom arrangements for quite awhile, I am always amazed at what he can do with these melodies -- whether classical, hymn, or gospel based! I am enjoying this foray into the Gospel canon--I love the sound and the techniques--rolled chords, octave work, blues notes/grace notes, tremelos and left hand bass patterns. This one is richly orchestrated--there's a section with rapid 6ths in broken chord patterns which was fun.
