How to help a child make sense of a therapy appointment. Barbara Lester, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, demonstrates the use of a visual support, in this case a written out routine, that can be used to help an autism spectrum child or teen make sense of what is expected to occur at the time of a psychotherapy/counseling appointment. The example that she demonstrates would be for a high functioning child who is old enough to read. However, the same kind of strategy can be adapted for use with a younger or lower functioning child by substituting pictures for the words, and can be established for other kinds of appointments besides a counseling appointment such as going to the doctor or going to the dentist.
