AITA for Telling My Dad I’m Not a Replacement Baby for His Wife’s Grief?
My mom died when I was a baby, and I’ve grown up honoring her memory with her side of the family. When my dad remarried, his wife immediately wanted to replace my mom and pushed to be seen as “my real mother.” I made it clear from the start that I didn’t want that.
Over the years, she repeatedly asked to adopt me, even crying and pressuring me to agree “because I loved her.” Therapy didn’t change my mind. I never stopped being clear about my boundaries.
Recently, she suffered a devastating miscarriage after IVF, and my dad decided that now was the time for me to give her what she wants. He says letting her adopt me would help her grieve and prove I care.
I finally snapped and told him that her grief does not give her the right to claim me, that I am not a replacement for her motherhood dreams, and that I will not be adopted just to make someone else feel better. Now my dad says he’s disappointed in me and expected more compassion.
