Up to 3.7 million voters could miss out on voting in May after dozens of local elections are delayed or cancelled, meaning some councillors may avoid facing the electorate for years.
Critics say the Government is using a clause in the Local Government Act 2000 to postpone votes, with many of the affected councils reportedly Labour-run.
Reform UK says it will launch a judicial review to force elections to go ahead, while the Tories and Lib Dems also accuse Labour of undermining democracy. Ministers argue delays are needed for council reorganisation and new mayoral structures.
